Berkley Sensation - August 2010

Paranormal Romance

This short story is set prior to the series, and can be read at any point in the Psy-Changeling series

Ria had been rescued by members of DarkRiver. She had been attacked, just because her family refused to pay "protection" to a vicious gang. She may have been roughed up, but she refused to be cowed. Emmett, the DarkRiver changeling who rescued her, was big and dangerous, but Ria trusted him implicitly. She knew that he wouldn't hurt her, and would do anything to protect her. But Ria knew it wasn't only protection Emmett had on his mind, and neither did Ria. Unfortunately, her family had also figured this out, and had their own opinions on the matter.

Growing up in a pack, Emmett knew how to deal with a close knit family. He could appreciate Ria's parents' concern and love, but he had no intention of allowing someone they had chosen to court Ria. He would be the one to stake a claim on Ria, and he wasn't above unsheathing his claws if need be.

Whisper of Sin was an enticing glimpse into DarkRiver's past. San Francisco wasn't yet in DarkRiver's control, and the cats were making it known that they were here to stay. Ria didn't know much about the changelings, thought they stuck to themselves, and would never accept a human. Emmett, however, knew from the first that Ria was his. Watching him court Ria, while carefully maneuvering around her parents was truly enjoyable. They simply were trying to make a match they felt was right. He was the match that was right, and he would prove it to all of them. I was thrilled to learn that we would go back and see Ria and Emmett's romance, and learn the full story she had once mentioned to Talin, in Mine to Possess, of when Ria screamed...and why Emmett tells her she needs to be gentle with him.
