When the Rogue Returns
The Duke's Men - Book 2
By Sabrina Jeffries
Pocket - February 2014
Historical Romance
When the Rogue Returns is the second book in Sabrina Jeffries' The Duke's Men series. Although the story can be read on its own, there are spoilers to the first book. Therefore, it might be best to start with the first story, What the Duke Desires.
Ten years had passed since Isabella Cale had been deserted by her criminal of a husband. She'd managed to make a new life for herself and her daughter, Amalie. She was quite happy with the work she did, making imitation jewelry. All legitimate, of course. Not what her sister and brother-in-law had intended. But she had left them, after being abandoned by her husband, and hoped to never see any of them again.
Although thrilled to have found his cousin and to be able to build a good relationship with him, Victor Cale was tired of the life Maximilian was thrusting him into. Rounds of balls and discussing fashion. He needed to do something, and using his friendship with Tristan Bonnaud seemed the perfect opportunity. He hoped Tristan could convince his brother Dominick Manton to send Victor out as an investigator. Not only would it help escape the tedium of society, but he'd be able to use the position to find that traitorous thief he had married.
He never anticipated his first assignment to lead him directly into the arms of the only woman he had ever loved. Or to learn that so much of what they'd both thought was true had been horrible lies.
When the Rogue Returns was passionate yet poignant reunion romance. Not only had Isa and Tristan lost ten years together, but that time with his daughter had been stolen. Thankfully, Ms Jeffries did not drag out the reunion, but deftly wove their reconciliation with a sweet secondary romance and a dash of suspense. Readers will be riveted to future stories in this series hoping to glimpse the further development of Victor's relationship with Amalie.
