Agnes Aubert's Mystical Cat Shelter

Heather Fawcett

Del Rey - February 2026

Fantasy

Widow Agnes Aubert was searching for a new rental property that would serve as both her cat shelter and her home. The one where she currently housed her cats had been one of many destroyed by dueling magicians. Luckily her cats were safe, but it was difficult to find an affordable location willing to accept a cat shelter.

Then she met Yannick who served as a representative of a landlord. He showed no qualms when Agnes mentioned the cat shelter and seemed overly eager to have her accept. In fact Agnes had her doubts about accepting the property that was offered at such a low amount, but she knew this was the best she could afford.

So what if she suspected the previous tenants may have been magicians. That wasn't a concern of hers. She had a good apartment and a safe place for her cats. They could be rehabilitated and adopted to new homes. As she settled in, she tried to ignore the odd appearance of a person, or two, who came in, and headed to the back of the building. She ignored the trapdoor too.

What she couldn't ignore was the mysterious woman who appeared one night at the shelter threatening her and her cats and asking for the Witch King himself, Havelock Renard. While he might have been able to thwart her for the moment, Havelock warned she would return. Agnes might have wanted to keep magic out of her life, but now she was surrounded by it. She would have to work with a man rumored to be able to destroy the world to save them all, while also rescuing more cats.

Agnes Aubert's Mystical Cat Shelter was a delight from beginning to end. I was engaged from the first word, enjoyed the world building and various characters, and fascinated by the basement spiders. I was especially intrigued by the idea of a cat shelter during the early 1900s. I loved how the relationship grew between Agnes and Havelock and especially the twist at the end that explained something from the beginning. As a cat lover, I laughed at the quirks and personalities of the various cats in residence. I think this would be a fun series and would be more than happy to return.
