Beyond the Melody
A Sweetwater Crossing Novel

Sweet Post WWII Romance
Jamison Andrew Edward Smythe IV was expected to take over leadership of the family shoe business. But Jim wasn't the man he'd been before the war. He had lost too many men. Seen too much. It was said that returning vets would need about three weeks to reacclimate to civilian life, but that just wasn't realistic for Jim. His fiancee couldn't deal with his issues, and had broken their engagement. His family didn't understand his drive to visit the families of the men he’d lost, but this was important to Jim. And why he’d found himself in Sweetwater Crossing Texas, visiting one last family.
Anna Finley enjoyed working with jukeboxes. Her brother had taught her, and now that he was gone, it was also a way to keep his memory alive. The war had also taken the man she'd expected to marry. Not only had he died, but just before his death, she'd learned that he'd discovered true love. He had realized he'd only loved her as a friend. Anna liked her work at the law office and the route taking care of the jukeboxes and knew this would be her life. She was content and knew better than to ask for more.
Except when Jim comes to town. She sees a man who cares for the families of the men who had been lost in the war. He is struggling with his issues and she recognizes that contrary to what had been written, he needed time and healing. And she was willing to help. She enjoyed spending time teaching him about jukeboxes, and sees him becoming a part of their community. But she knows better than to hope for more. She’d done that once and knew she was not the happily ever after for a man.
Beyond the Melody is a sweet romance between two individuals who must both overcome obstacles to find a future together. Although I've seen countless movies set at this time, and here I'll recommend The Best Years of Our Lives and a Christmas classic It Happened On 5th Avenue, I've typically avoided reading romances set during this period. It is difficult to read about the trauma these men endured and were expected to shrug off on their return home, and Ms Cabot expertly weaves that into this story. I really enjoyed seeing aspects of life I’ve heard about, learning about the jukeboxes, and watching Anna and Jim find their own happily-ever-after together.
